Former India captain Rohit Sharma has cautioned Team India against complacency ahead of their highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2026 encounter against Pakistan, stressing that reputation and past records will carry little weight once the match begins.
India are set to face Pakistan on February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, with many observers considering India favourites based on recent performances and historical dominance in ICC tournaments. However, Rohit believes such labels can be misleading in the unpredictable format of T20 cricket.
‘No Such Thing as Favourites’
Speaking at an event in Dubai, Rohit emphasised that T20 cricket often defies expectations and that any team is capable of producing a match-winning performance on a given day. He noted that the global exposure of players and the rapid evolution of T20 cricket have significantly reduced gaps between teams.
According to Rohit, assuming victory before stepping onto the field can be dangerous. He stressed that success will depend entirely on how well a team performs during the match rather than past achievements or rankings.
Focus on Performance, Not History
India have historically enjoyed an upper hand over Pakistan in World Cup encounters and have also won their last five T20I meetings against their rivals. Despite this record, Rohit underlined that previous success offers no guarantee in a high-pressure tournament setting.
He pointed out that factors such as current form, team composition, or past dominance cannot replace execution on match day. In the fast-paced T20 format, even small lapses can change the outcome quickly.
