New Delhi: The United States has assured India that it will work closely with New Delhi to help meet the country’s energy demands despite the ongoing conflict in West Asia. US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said Washington understands India’s growing energy needs and is committed to ensuring stable energy supplies in both the short and long term.
Landau made the remarks in New Delhi on Thursday while attending the Raisina Dialogue 2026, where he addressed concerns about possible disruptions in global oil and gas supplies due to tensions in West Asia. The region plays a crucial role in global energy shipments and remains one of India’s major sources of crude oil.
During the discussion, Landau also indicated that a long-awaited trade agreement between India and the United States is nearing completion. Describing the deal as “close to the finish line,” he said the agreement could open new economic opportunities and further strengthen commercial ties between the two nations.
According to Landau, the proposed trade pact would help expand bilateral trade, improve market access, and enhance cooperation in important sectors such as supply chains and regulatory frameworks. Negotiations between officials from both countries have been ongoing as they work toward finalising the agreement.
He also highlighted the broader strategic partnership between India and the United States, noting their shared interests in areas such as counterterrorism efforts and safeguarding freedom of navigation along key maritime routes.
Landau’s remarks reflect the deepening partnership between the two democracies as they seek to expand cooperation across economic, security, and geopolitical areas in an increasingly complex global landscape.
