Amazon has announced an additional €18 billion ($21 billion) investment in Spain to accelerate the expansion of its data centre infrastructure and strengthen artificial intelligence capabilities. With this latest commitment, the company’s total planned investment in the country will rise to €33.7 billion.
The announcement was made in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress, following a meeting between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer.
Zapolsky described the move as a strategic milestone, positioning Spain at the centre of Amazon’s European AI operations.
“With this investment, we make Spain the AI epicentre of our operations in Europe,” he said.
The new funding is expected to generate significant economic impact, supporting up to 30,000 jobs through 2035. These roles will span construction, technology, operations, and local supply chains tied to Amazon’s expanding cloud infrastructure.
This latest announcement builds on Amazon’s previous commitment in Spain. In 2024, its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), pledged €15.7 billion to develop data centres in the northeastern Aragon region. That project alone was projected to support an estimated average of 17,500 jobs annually at local businesses through 2033.
Spain has increasingly positioned itself as a strategic technology hub within Europe, benefiting from growing demand for cloud computing, digital transformation, and AI-driven innovation. Amazon’s expanded investment signals long-term confidence in the country’s infrastructure, talent base, and regulatory environment.
As global competition intensifies in artificial intelligence and cloud services, Amazon’s move reinforces its commitment to strengthening its European digital backbone while contributing to Spain’s broader economic and technological growth ambitions.
