Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and its digital arm Jio will invest ₹10 lakh crore over the next seven years to drive India’s artificial intelligence (AI) transformation, Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani announced at the India AI Impact Summit.
Ambani described the investment as long-term, nation-building capital rather than a speculative move. He said the goal is to position India as a global AI powerhouse while making AI services affordable and accessible to every citizen.
From Internet Era to Intelligence Era
After connecting India to the internet revolution, Jio now aims to lead what Ambani called the “intelligence era.” He pledged to reduce the cost of AI as dramatically as Jio once reduced mobile data prices, ensuring that India does not have to “rent intelligence” from abroad.
RIL’s AI-focused division, Jio Intelligence, will develop India’s sovereign compute infrastructure and collaborate with leading global technology companies as partners and co-creators rather than mere importers of AI solutions.
Building Sovereign AI Infrastructure
Ambani identified the high cost and scarcity of computing power as the biggest barriers to AI growth. To address this, Jio Intelligence will focus on three major initiatives:
- Establishing gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centres
- Leveraging up to 10 GW of surplus green energy
- Deploying nationwide edge computing infrastructure
Construction has already begun on large AI-ready data centres in Jamnagar, with over 120 MW expected to go live in the second half of 2026 and a roadmap toward gigawatt-scale capacity.
AI for All
Comparing AI to the mythical “Akshaya Patra” that provides endless nourishment, Ambani said AI can deliver limitless gains in productivity and knowledge. However, he stressed that AI must democratise opportunity rather than concentrate power.
He added that India’s strengths — its population scale, democratic framework, digital infrastructure, and data generation — uniquely position the country to emerge as one of the world’s leading AI powers.
The overarching vision: deliver intelligence to every citizen, business, and government service at scale, with reliability and affordability matching Jio’s earlier telecom revolution.
