India’s team combination ahead of the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage has come under fresh discussion after opener Abhishek Sharma registered his third consecutive duck, this time against the Netherlands at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 18, 2026. The left-handed opener is yet to score a run in the tournament, having previously fallen early against the USA and Pakistan as well.
Abhishek’s repeated early dismissals have put pressure on India at the top of the order, with all three wickets coming within the first two overs of the innings. The lack of stability during the powerplay has raised concerns within the team management, especially as the tournament now moves into its decisive phase.
The situation has unexpectedly worked in favour of Sanju Samson, who had earlier fallen out of the playing XI after inconsistent performances. Samson’s only appearance in the tournament came against Namibia, where he scored a quick 22 off just eight deliveries, including three sixes and a boundary, before being dismissed while attempting to accelerate further. Though the cameo did not secure him a permanent spot, Abhishek’s continued struggles have reopened the debate around India’s opening combination.
Samson’s overall numbers in 2026 have been modest, with 68 runs in six matches at an average of 11.33. However, his impressive record against South Africa could influence India’s selection thinking ahead of the Super 8 clash. In five T20 internationals against the Proteas, the 31-year-old has amassed 253 runs at an exceptional average of 63.25 and a strike rate of 190.22, including two centuries — statistics that stand out among Indian batters against that opposition.
With India set to face South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the West Indies in the Super 8 stage, team management may consider experience and match-up advantages over current form alone. The match against South Africa on February 22 in Ahmedabad is likely to be particularly crucial, potentially prompting a reassessment of the batting order.
India will then travel to Chennai to face Zimbabwe on February 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, before concluding their Super 8 campaign against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on March 1.
As the tournament enters its business end, India’s selection decisions could play a defining role — and Abhishek Sharma’s lean run may just open the door for Sanju Samson to reclaim his place at a critical juncture.
