US Alters India Trade Deal Language, Raising New Questions

The White House has revised its fact sheet on the US-India trade agreement, removing references to pulses and softening language around India’s proposed purchase of American goods, triggering fresh confusion over the scope of the deal. The changes come amid growing concern among Indian farmer groups, who fear potential concessions in the sensitive agriculture sector.

Earlier language suggested India would reduce tariffs on several US agricultural products, including pulses a dietary staple for millions. The updated version drops that reference and replaces firm commitments with softer wording, stating India only “intends” to expand purchases rather than making binding promises.

The revisions have intensified political debate, with farmer unions threatening protests and opposition leaders accusing the government of yielding too much ground. Officials in New Delhi have maintained that core agricultural interests remain protected and that no compulsory commitments were made.

Analysts say the evolving language reflects delicate negotiations as both nations attempt to deepen trade ties while avoiding domestic backlash. With a detailed agreement expected soon, the shifting narrative has underscored the fragile balance between economic cooperation and political sensitivity in one of the world’s most closely watched trade talks.
